For Monday,
May 19 and Tuesday, May 20, 2008, The Eurasia Center and the Eurasian Business Coalition co-organized the 27th Annual US-Russia World Forum. Held in the United States Senate Hart Building, US Congress, the 27th Forum offered a challenging agenda featuring topics on investments in energy and natural resources. Other presentations included topics of high technology, finance, international trade, and economic development. This event provided participants the opportunity to interact with those in Russia and Eurasia seeking to expand two-way trade, direct investments, business opportunities and open communications with counterparts.There were discussions on Russia’s new Federal Plan for a greatly expanding Russian economy based upon significant governmental investments in new housing, health care, technology, and education.
Alexander Lebedev Алескандр Лебедев, Russian billionaire addresses the US-Russia World Forum. Chairman of the National Reserve Corporation, Lebedev is the Vice-Chairman of Duma's committee on the Commonwealth of Independent States and co-owner of Russia’s Novaya Gazeta newspaper. The US-Russia World
Forum has become one of the premier catalysts for opening discussions and
building relationships between Russian, American and other policymakers
within European and Asian nations.
Participants at the 2008 event met with members of the American Senate and House of Representatives, the Russian Duma, the Russian federal and local representatives; leaders of Russia’s NGO communities, directors of Russian high technology research centers; along with officials of numerous American governmental agencies including the Departments of Commerce, State, and International Trade. Lt. General Henry A. “Trey” Obering III, Director of the Missile Defense Agency makes the case for supporting missile ballistic defense against emerging nuclear threats and accidental launch. Former Soviet/Russian General Vladimir Dvorkin who was in charge of Russian Strategic Missile Defense and is currently at the Institute of World Economy & International Relations made a presentation on Russian concerns with NATO and BMD. During the breaks and lunch formal introductions were arranged along with business card exchanges and informal discussions. Special presentations were given about the macro/micro-economic environment; prospects for trade, business, and investment opportunities; social developments; and the current on-the-ground assessment of the challenges and opportunities facing Russian, Eurasian, and American business companies and governments.
